Maryland’s first-ever Best of Maryland Arts Education Festival is set to take place on Friday, April 20, from 11:00am to 5:00pm. The daylong event will honor and celebrate the impact of arts education in Maryland.

A collaborative effort on the part of the Maryland State Department of Education Office of Fine Arts and Maryland’s first lady, Yumi Hogan, along with the Maryland State Arts Council, the Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts, the festival will take place in fine art venues throughout Baltimore City’s historic Mount Vernon district and will feature performances from 350 students and small ensembles from 14 of Maryland’s school districts, including the Performing & Visual Arts Magnet of Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Art from across the board will be represented, with performances ranging from musical theater to dance to visual and media art. Venue partners include Center Stage, Walters Art Museum, Peabody Conservatory, Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church and Saint Ignatius Church. Opening ceremonies take place at the centerpiece of Mount Vernon and the Washington Monument.

The opening ceremony will begin at 11:00am at the Mount Vernon Place Washington Monument with a speech by Dr. Karen Salmon, superintendent of Maryland schools, and the closing ceremony will be at 4:15pm at Baltimore Center Stage with speeches by Mayor Catherine Pugh and Maryland first lady Yumi Hogan.
