In the past, Joan M. Smith would refer her investment planning clients to other professionals for estate planning needs, but she observed the estate planning done was inadequate or incomplete. Thus Maryland Estate Planning was born to serve the needs of the community.
We believed there was a big void in the planning our clients did, explained Smith, who co-owns Maryland Estate Planning with Roland F. Smith. So we searched for partners who could help us to develop the expertise necessary, as well as the educational resources and certifications we needed. As the years have gone by, other professionals attorneys, accountants, insurance agents and even the courts have seen fit to use our services as a trustee.
But more important to Smith is the service shown to clients. We are all an answer to someones prayer, she said. We want to address all the what ifs in life. What if my spouse becomes disabled? What if my children need special help? What if I become widowed?
Maryland Estate Planning prides themselves on a personal commitment to their clients, and views them as extended family. The team stands beside customers through all of lifes ups and downs from hospital stays to weddings to funerals. The staff even attends baptisms and graduations for clients children and funerals when clients pass away. Some of our clients are now third generation, Smith said.
The dedication to clients extends from a genuine caring. We do not turn our clients over to staff. They get the owners of the company and our complete attention whether it is a Saturday night or Christmas Eve. We know we can make someones life better in a big or small way.
Beyond helping people plan for after their departure, Maryland Estate Planning works with community churches to help with charitable giving ministries. They recently made a commitment to help the new Prince Georges County African American Museum and Cultural Center fundraise for construction.
Over the years, the company has also supported local charities and school fundraisers. Smith personally donated her hair to Locks of Love in 2011.
In the years to come, Smith anticipates Maryland Estate Planning will continue to serve the community just as they have done for the last 30 years. Well be here doing the same things weve done all along in the same building that we own, she said. We will take care of our clients and their children in whatever stage of life. The people in our community need us and we need them, she said. Our commitment is to primarily help this community; its where we live.
