The streets along Southgate Marketplace might be located in Glen Burnie, but inside Capri Pizza & Sub Express, the atmosphere is that of a genuine New York Italian pizzeria, where the Misuraca family of Severna Park has enjoyed 25 years of taking care of customers.

When Guiseppe “Joe” and Karen Misuraca moved from Queens, New York City, to Maryland in 1990, they came to assume ownership of the small shop, which Joe’s cousin had recently opened. What followed was the American Dream: “We came to make a better life for ourselves and start a family,” Karen explained.

In the 25 years since, Joe and Karen have raised four kids and established Capri Pizza & Sub Express as a local eatery where people can count on being welcomed warmly and fed well. The walls are decorated with family pictures, the staff members chatter cordially as they work, and the air smells of fresh dough baking up in the hot ovens. “It’s a homey kind of place,” described Karen, who greets customers as if they were members of the family and graciously thanks them as they leave. “We want to thank all the customers because we appreciate every day that they keep coming,” Joe added.

And keep coming they do. Customers have responded favorably to the restaurant’s food, and Karen cited that many people have called it the best pizza they’ve ever eaten. The menu is from Joe’s repertoire, developed from the cooking skills the Sicilian-born cook learned growing up in New York. Everything is freshly prepared every day, from the New York-style thin-crust pizza baked with homemade dough to the grilled chicken salad that patrons can’t get enough of. And although the intimate dining area can be well populated at times, Karen said that they always seem to have enough room for everyone.

“I love coming to work every day, making delicious food and taking care of the customers,” Karen said. “To feel the love from the customers and how much they appreciate us is very rewarding.”

Rewarding though the business may be, the Misuracas have worked hard and with dedication. Karen and Joe will often put in 12-hour days at the shop, and there haven’t been many vacations in the past 25 years. Their children — Rosie, Gina, Sal and Katie — have all had successful academic careers at Severna Park High School and have proceeded to Maryland colleges, and each has held a part-time job at the shop at some time or another.

As Joe put it, he and Karen are blessed. “I raised four beautiful children out of this place, and I have a great, beautiful wife to take care of business for me,” he concluded. “I’m very proud to be here.”
