Dotti Snyder Tends To Mountain Road Flag Site

During her youth, Dotti Snyder was always playing in the dirt and building forts, so when her sons joined Cub Scouts in 2000, she saw not only a great parenting opportunity but also the chance to share her affinity for the outdoors.

She started in 2002 as cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 773. In 2005, she stepped up to be event coordinator for Boy Scout Troop 773.

“It’s about being an individual and learning things that enlighten your life because you want to make life more interesting,” Snyder said of scouts. “You learn everything from doing knots to learning how to make a fire to taking care of animals; you learn all sorts of stuff.”

But although the boys in Cub Scout Pack 773 were learning valuable skills, Snyder felt something was missing.

“All the boys we had — from Tigers to Webelos — those boys needed another outlet for community service,” Snyder said. “Working at Himmel’s, with the flag across the road, I noticed that no one ever took care of it.”

As the general manager of Himmel’s Farm & Garden Center, Snyder had easy access to the Route 100 flag site. Under her supervision, Pack and Troop 773 began to beautify the long-neglected area.

“We would trim the bushes, mulch and add flowers,” Snyder said of the process she led every spring and fall.

Around 2011, the troop decided the flag area needed further revitalization, so Snyder and Troop 773 approached the Pasadena Business Association for help to revitalize the site.

Pasadena businesses came together to aid Troop 773 with the restoration effort; JB Machine Parts and Supplies reinforced the base of the flag pole, Bay Country Rentals donated concrete for an enlarged space around the flag, Pasadena Signs replaced cables on the flag and Vietnam War veteran Charlie Johns cut grass, removed trash and weed-whacked. “It’s a whole community effort to maintain it and keep it nice,” Snyder insisted.

The Pasadena Business Association uses the flag site as the location of its annual Veterans Day ceremony, which returns for its seventh year on November 11 at 1:00pm.

Troop 773 folded in December 2016 due to membership (Snyder said there is plenty of interest, but plenty of troops throughout Pasadena meant that 773 was spread thin). For the flag site, Himmel’s still donates mulch, nursery stock and plant material — resources that are now used by Girl Scout Troop 1631, also known as the Solley cluster.

Snyder looks back fondly on the years of mentoring scouts and is proud that seven Boy Scouts from Troop 773 graduated to Eagle Scouts. Although the leaders of Troop 773 worked with the boys to do good deeds, it was not for recognition but because “it’s the right thing to do,” and Snyder is glad that Pasadena can give some recognition to the men and women who served the United States.

“It’s a major passion for me,” Snyder said. “It’s a place to go and reflect about the folks who have given everything. As long as I’m able, I’m going to make sure it’s maintained.”
