Let me start by wishing all students a happy start to the new school year! How are you feeling about it? I always remember the back-to-school season being incredibly bittersweet: I hated to see summer come to an end, but it was exciting to be back with friends every day, back in a routine, and back to learning and exploring. I hope that all of you enjoyed your breaks, but more importantly, I hope that you’re looking ahead with eagerness and openness. You’re going to have many opportunities come your way in the months ahead. Be sure to look out for them and take advantage of them when you can.

Maybe this will give you some perspective: Ask any adult about a favorite teacher or extracurricular activity from school. We all have them. I could write mine out right here, but I think it would be more personal and more meaningful if you asked someone you know. It doesn’t have to be a parent — heck, I know many of you might be more inclined to listen if it’s somebody other than your parent. Ask a neighbor, a coach, a scout leader or your manager at work.

But go ahead and ask them about their favorite teacher or club or class from when they were in school. Listen to how passionate they are when they talk about it. Pay attention to how it affected them and changed them.

That’s because these favorite teachers and clubs and classes are what shape us into who we are today. These were what excited us, gave us our drive, chartered our course. And the memories stuck with us!

Guess what, students — you’re getting to experience all of that now!

I’m not saying it’s all going to be positive. There are going to be plenty of negative experiences that go along with the positive ones. But for what it’s worth, you’ve got an editor at your local newspaper who’s rooting for you.

Teachers and administrators, my best wishes for a great school year go out to you as well. We at the Voice appreciate the dedication you show every day to helping students prosper and grow. The start of the school year is just as exhilarating and nerve-wracking for you as it is for students, so we hope this first month goes especially well for you.

As always, if you have any thoughts, input or news tips, feel free to reach out to me at dylan@pasadenavoice.com. I always enjoy hearing from you.
