When the Emily Schindler Memorial Scholarship Triathlon returns for its 12th installment on Saturday, April 14, participants will again contribute to an event that has made a big impact in the community. Since its inception, the triathlon has raised more than $46,000 for a fund that has provided 80 scholarships to swimmers who demonstrate team spirit and kindness.

The sprint triathlon comprises an 800-yard swim, 9-mile bike and 3-mile run — activities split between the Severna Park Community Center pool and the B&A Trail. The triathlon can be completed individually or by teams of two or three people. Anyone seeking an even greater challenge can attempt the Flamingo Feat (1,600-yard swim, 18-mile bike, 6-mile run).

The recreational triathlon was established in honor of former SPY swimmer and Chesapeake High School graduate Emily Schindler, who died in a car accident in 2004. Schindler began swimming competitively when she was 9 years old, yet she placed her friendships first and focused on having a “best time” rather than getting a “best time.” Her spirit prevails at the triathlon each year as many friends and neighbors come together to honor her memory.

The scholarship is awarded annually to any graduating or past SPY swimmer who has been on the team for at least one year. A minimum of one scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is awarded each year.

Race check-in begins at 6:00am and the race commences at 7:00am. To register, visit www.active.com. Forms are also available at the Severna Park Community Center and can be mailed to 623 Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard, Severna Park, MD 21146.
