The Anne Arundel County Literacy Council (AACLC) will hold the third annual Literacy Lights the Way 5K walk-a-thon on Saturday, October 13, from 8:30am to 11:00am. The walk will take place on the B&A Trail between Marley Station Mall and Jumpers Hole Road in Glen Burnie.

Previous AACLC walk-a-thons have been a success. Dozens of participants and businesses such as Koons Annapolis Toyota, 3-Point Products and Sandy Spring Bank of Annapolis have raised almost $20,000 to provide free, convenient reading, writing, math, and speaking English instruction for adults and out-of-school youth in Anne Arundel County.

Six women launched the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council in 1977 to address a local need for literacy counseling. The AACLC is a nonprofit of about 250 tutors and volunteers dedicated to serving the needs of adults and out-of-school youth throughout Anne Arundel County with reading, writing, math and speaking English instruction. Services are convenient and free, and students meet regularly with tutors to work toward personal goals, like functional literacy, math proficiency, or obtaining a GED.

Information about registration, the route and the walk is available at the literacy council’s website: www.icanread.org. Walkers can register at www.payit2.com/collect-page/101649. Registration is $25, and there is no fee for AACLC students and children 16 and under.

Free snacks and water will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to every child who participates. The walk is wheelchair and stroller accessible. Leashed pets are welcome.
