Save the Date! Severna Park Middle School (SPMS) presents the romantic and action-packed musical adaptation, Beauty and the Beast, Jr. with four shows from March 31st running through April 2nd.
This isn’t going to be the Beauty and the Beast that you’ve seen in the past, so be sure to bring the whole family to at least one of four upcoming shows. The stage play promises to delight all audiences with a refreshed, creative interpretation of Disney’s tale of improbable love, transformation, and tolerance.
SPMS’s Spartan Lyrical Society, the non-profit theatrical organization that supports vocal, drama, and musical theatre at the middle school, has a new twist on the old classic. The story and stage are set in a retro-futuristic “steampunk” world that blends the Victorian era, the Wild West, and an industrial, steam-powered age.
Sixty-three Severna Park Middle School students are cast in the musical. Additionally, dozens of student tech crew and parent volunteers are working behind the scenes. More than 100 singers and dancers auditioned for the production in January, and the cast dove immediately into a grueling schedule of nearly forty rehearsals. An ambitious set design project also began later that month.
Beauty and the Beast tells the story of a young prince who is offered a cursed rose from a disguised enchantress. The witch transforms him into a beast and casts a spell on his castle. As the rose gradually loses its petals and the beast comes of age, he is destined to remain a beast if he doesn’t win the mutual love of another.
Leslie Robinson stars as Belle and Nick Ivey as the Beast. Lumiere is played by Jaron Givens, Brady Cavanagh as Cogsworth, Kaitlyn Mummert as Mrs. Potts, Sophie Oswald as Chip, Gus Bachman as Gaston, and Lucy Feldmann as Lefou. The show is directed by theatre veteran, Atticus Boidy, with musical direction from SPMS Chorus teacher, Sara Metcalfe, and choreography by Megan Murphy. Kelly O’Brien is the producer.
Beauty and the Beast is fun for all ages. Four shows are offered—March 31st at 7pm; April 1st at 2pm and 7pm; and April 2nd at 2pm. Tickets go on sale to the public on March 17th for a special advance price of $9.50. Purchases can be made at http://www.spmssings.org or at the door subject to availability.
