If readers failed to read the entire recent article titled “Chesapeake Bay Health Improves As Government Reduces Enforcement,” they might think the bay is improving without government funding. This is erroneous, as the bill to reduce funding has not passed out of Congress. The bay and rivers in Maryland are not in good health. For example, many of our Maryland rivers received a failing grade in categories that grade the quality of the water. They need both government funding and public support. Please contact your federal and state representatives and ask for funding to protect the bay, rivers and creeks of Maryland.

There is another thing that we can do ourselves to improve our waterways significantly. According to the Maryland Department of the Environment, one of the leading causes of water pollution is dog poop! If you are a dog owner, please scoop the mess, even if the mess is in the woods or in an unused area. The summer rains come and wash whatever is on the ground into our rivers and creeks. You may think it doesn’t matter, but we have millions of dogs in our area and less than 40 percent of the mess is being properly disposed of by picking up the poop, flushing it down the toilet, and putting the paper towel or bag in your trash.

The bay and Maryland rivers are a source of enjoyment for many — fishermen, crabbers, boaters, paddleboarders, kayakers, swimmers, and people who just enjoy sitting and watching the river flow by. If we don’t improve the water quality, how long will the fish and crabs survive? And if they go, the osprey, blue heron, cormorants, ducks, geese and eagles will follow.

Please do your part. It would make a tremendous difference.
