Northeast To Present Iconic Musical March 1-3

Audiences won’t witness a reunion of the original “Grease” cast anytime soon, but a new generation of adolescents at Northeast High School is bringing to life the tale of the cocky but charming Danny Zuko and his summer fling, Sandy Dumbrowski, this March.

Assembled prior to the Christmas holiday, the cast has rehearsed at least three days per week since early January. Northeast’s production has stellar acting, memorable catchphrases, detailed choreography, and iconic songs backed by live music courtesy of a keyboardist, drummer and bassist.

Senior Izaiah Plaza has nailed Danny Zuko’s slang, mannerisms and too-cool-for-school attitude by practicing in front of a mirror and by talking to himself.

“I like his complexity,” Plaza said of his character. “He’s a big, tough greaser, but he’s also a sweetheart.”

As Sandy Dumbrowski, the naïve bookworm navigating her way through the social sphere of Rydell High School, senior Corrine Hensley convincingly plays the part of Danny Zuko’s love interest. Hensley played Mrs. Potts in Northeast’s adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast” last year, and she was thrilled to learn that “Grease” was this year’s musical. She called this adaptation a “revival” for younger audiences.

“I was hoping to get the part of Sandy, of course, but it’s rare that [the production] has a brown-haired Sandy,” Hensley said. “‘Grease’ was always my favorite movie, so I’ve been singing and dancing along to it since I was little.”

Vital to the show are a gang of greasers called the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies, a clique of gum-chewing girls who don pink jackets. The students in those roles are just as enthusiastic as the leads.

Senior AJ Moya is cast as Kenickie, a surly and respected member of the T-Birds. “The personality of my character is like a jerk, so it’s been a lot of fun, and we all get along,” Moya said.

Matt Wukitch, who plays Doody and the Teen Angel, seconded the notion of the cast having great chemistry. Leading up to the show, he watched “Grease” on an almost daily basis.

“It’s fun because it’s like an old-school high school scene,” he said. “And most of us already know each other, so it’s been easier [to gel] onstage.”

Audiences will enjoy hearing the cast belt out songs such as “We Go Together,” “Summer Nights,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “Look At Me, I’m Sandra Dee” and “You’re the One That I Want.” The cast is primed to strut, jump and hand-jive thanks to help from choreographer Rose Mulliken. And Kevin Franc, stage crew and set director, has worked to bring Rydell High School to Pasadena.

Karen MacFie, a volunteer with the drama department, said there was great excitement when director Sarah Delsignore chose “Grease” as the seasonal musical.

“I think they picked this show because they wanted something the kids could relate to, even though it takes place almost 60 years ago,” MacFie said. “Teenage problems are teenage problems no matter what decade.”

Northeast High School will perform “Grease” on March 1, 2 and 3 at 7:00pm each evening. Tickets are being sold by seat number. Although tickets may be purchased at the door, guests are encouraged to buy in advance so they can choose their seats. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. For information on when tickets are being sold each week, call the school at 410-437-6400 or email sdelsignore@aacps.org.

So, what can you expect when Northeast puts on its production of “Grease” this March? The rules are … there ain't no rules!

“It’s an amazing show,” Plaza said. “It’s everything people love about ‘Grease’ and more.”
