More than 70 children from across Maryland cast their lines off the Bill Burton Fishing Pier and into the Chesapeake Bay at Fort Smallwood Park on Saturday, June 30, in hopes of catching a prized fish in the Pasadena Sportfishing Group’s annual kids fishing derby.

The weather was sultry, but that didn’t stop 13-year-old Nilyne Moorman and her grandfather, Michael, both from Clinton, Maryland, from coming out for their fourth fishing derby. Nilyne was one of the competition’s winners in 2017.

“Fishing is such a wonderful opportunity for me and my granddaughter,” said Michael. “We enjoy spending time together, especially fishing. It’s good bonding time.”

Hanna McAbee, from Federalsburg, was in the competition for the first time. “My whole family likes to fish together,” said the 12-year-old angler. “The biggest fish I ever caught was a catfish.”

Odenton resident Ryan Mackall starting fishing with his grandfather, Donald Mackall, when he was just 3 years old. “If the fish is kind of small, I throw it back,” said Ryan, a 9-year-old. “But if it’s big, I might eat it.”

Donald added, “I love spending this time with Ryan. In fact, we like it so much, Ryan talked me into buying a boat a few years ago.”

Lake Shore siblings Katelyn and Andrew Lane, 7 and 9 respectively, have different ideas about fishing. Andrew said he tries to catch something big enough to eat, while Katelyn said about the fish she catches, “I like to look at them, hold them, pet them, and then throw them back into the water.”

The Lane parents, Brent and Lindsay, said the whole family fishes while camping. “It’s really fun watching them,” said Brent. “It’s great to see how excited they get when they catch something.”
