Each month, the Pasadena Voice poses a question to a local fifth-grade class. This month, students from Mr. Bellarin and Mr. Graulich’s classes at Riviera Beach Elementary answered the question:

What is something that you used to be afraid of and why?

I was afraid of the dark because I was scared something would come out of my closet and get me. But now I’m not. As I got older, I realized that monsters don’t exist. But now I’m scared of clowns.

Emma Anderson

When I was little, I was really scared of heights. Some of my favorite rides now were terrifying when I was little, but my family always said they would be fun, so I did them and I liked them so much I went on them three or four times.

Mikaela Cook

I used to be afraid of bees. I’m not afraid bees anymore because I keep getting told that if you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you.

Brayden Davis

Sharks because I always hear of shark attacks, but now I’ve researched them, and sharks think we are food for them and are actually more scared of us then we are of them.

Luke Fox

I used to be afraid of the deep end in the pool. I’m not anymore because I am a great swimmer and I can float.

Olivia Frank

I used to be afraid of my closet and the dark because my closet curtain would move. My fan kept blowing it back and forth, and I think something was in there. But when I turn on my light, I found out it was my fan blowing.

Aliyah Guamera

I used to be afraid of the dark. I am no longer afraid of the dark, because I had a dream about a clown hurting my family and I stood up to the clown in my dream.

Tyler Hall

I used to be afraid of snakes because they had sharp teeth and were really fast. They also could get really big. Then somebody let me hold a snake and now I love them and I want one as a pet.

Matthew Hieatzman

I used to be afraid of math and school because people used to call me stupid and worthless, but my mom told me just because someone isn’t good at something else doesn’t mean I’m stupid. My mom inspired me to be a great smart girl; my mom would say I have the sweetest heart.

Mallory Jones

I was afraid of heights. But then I went to Hershey Park and got on the Skyrush. I was scared. When we got on, it was hidden and I enjoyed it very much. When we got off, I said, ‘I’m never doing it a second time.’ But later on, I said it was fun.

Trenton Lenhert

One of my largest fears was Bigfoot. During the day, he was so cool, except when I was in the basement. But my love of his mystery and science increased; this caused me to research him more and more. That has brought me to two conclusions. One, Bigfoot is real. Two, I don’t have to be afraid of him anymore.

Jack McNiece

I used to be afraid of fireworks, but I’m no longer afraid of fireworks because I’m used to them. My dad’s friend always has a Fourth of July cookout every year and sets off fireworks. Also, the neighborhood people set off fireworks in the middle of the night.

Kaylee O’Dea

I used to be afraid of the dark. When I told my dad, he said I’m not afraid of the dark, I am afraid of what can be in the dark, so that made more sense. I’m not afraid of what could be in the dark anymore because I know things like the boogeymen aren’t real.

Bryce Peacock

I was afraid of fireworks because they are loud and it looks like the fireworks are going to land on you. I’m not afraid of fireworks anymore because I went outside when they were going on and I was fine.

Harper Reagoso

I used to be afraid of roller coasters. I’m not afraid anymore because I rode a roller coaster in Ocean City and it was really fun.

Kyle Richards

I used to be afraid of roller coasters because I was scared of heights. Now, I am only scared a little bit. They are fun and exciting to get on because of the drop in the end. The only reason I am afraid a little is because of upside-down ones.

Titus Simeona

I used to be afraid of snakes, but now I love them. They’re cute, not scary. They have beautiful designs. They used to be scary, but now they aren’t.

Charlie Sutphin

I was scared of deep water, now that we went to Drownproofing, I’m not scared of deep water.

Logan Tewey

Spiders are creepy to me. They looked weird and they look cute now, not weird, but still creepy.

Hailey Travers

When I was little, I was afraid of the dark. I always thought that someone would take me away in my sleep and hurt me. I also thought there were monsters in the closet, and ghosts were outside watching me. I used to be scared, but my parents told me not to be scared!

Rebecca Vasquez

I used to be afraid of a bad grade. But now, as I get older, things get easier and I can read really well, and I understand math fluently. I just try my very best, no matter what.
