Dane Pegg used to cruise past challengers as a runner for Chesapeake High School — both cross-country and track and field — but the 2010 graduate is now preparing to cruise across the open seas as an electronics technician aboard the USS Washington fast-attack submarine.

At 377 feet long, the USS Washington can dive to depths greater than 800 feet and operate at speeds in excess of 25 knots submerged. The submarine was commissioned during a ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia, on October 7.

Known as Petty Officer Pegg to his comrades, the former Pasadena resident is responsible for developing plans to support the boat in navigation and maintain and troubleshoot electrical equipment. He supports Washington's mission directly by operating and maintaining the equipment required to get the boat underway.

The USS Washington is a multi-mission platform designed to carry out the seven core competencies of the submarine force: anti-submarine warfare; anti-surface warfare; delivery of special operations forces; strike warfare; irregular warfare; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; and mine warfare.

As the command prepares for upcoming missions, Pegg is looking forward to rigging the bridge in the sail. He finds that once the rigging is complete, looking up at the night sky or sunset is worth all of the work.

Pegg's great-great-uncle served in the Army during D-Day. Pegg joined the Navy to set himself up for the future and learn valuable skills.

He enjoys working out and sports; ultimate Frisbee is his favorite. His goals include finishing college and earning a bachelor's degree.
