The 2017 Cougars have experienced the ups and downs a high school football season can bring, and there is still opportunity to finish on a high.

After a season-opening loss, the Cougars rattled off victories in their next four games, defeating Severna Park, Catonsville, Glen Burnie and Lansdowne.

The win over Lansdowne on September 28 was a 41-0 drubbing that featured a balanced attack offensively and a smothering defensive performance. Colby McNulty ran for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Tony Watkins carried 10 times for 48 yards and two scores and Cole Foca had a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Andrew Colangela had seven tackles in the victory, while Cody Carpenter had four sacks and Michael Gimon had four tackles and two sacks.

What followed was a tough Friday night as the visitors for South River’s homecoming in a 28-9 loss (photos) and a difficult opponent for their own homecoming on October 13 in a 34-14 defeat to Old Mill that dropped the team to 4-3 overall. Quarterback Dylan Young managed 280 yards passing against Old Mill, including a 58-yard touchdown pass to Russell Tongue, and Khalil Gary scored on a 2-yard run, but it wasn’t enough to get the Cougars past the Patriots.

Chesapeake faces a tough test in Arundel in Week 8, followed by Southern in Week 9. The Week 10 ‘Dena Bowl could offer a playoff spot to the winner if either Northeast or Chesapeake can enter the game with five or more wins.
