The Lake Shore Lightning ‘03 14U softball team put together a dominant performance at the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Win For Warriors tournament in Eldersburg over Memorial Day weekend, going 9-0 to win the tournament championship.

The Lightning received outstanding pitching from Cheyenne Beayon, Rebecca Gottleib, Jerzie Nutile and Harper Allee Press; excellent catching from Nutile, Kenzie McLellan, Sam Cinotti and Alex Bailey; amazing defense from Rose Weidenhoft, Sophia Bianco, Linsey Voorhese and Courtney Leisner and hitting from the entire lineup in going undefeated over the weekend.

Lake Shore defeated the Calvert Fury 2k2 in the championship game by a score of 5-4. In that contest, Beayon, McLellan and Gottleib all had base hits in the bottom of the seventh inning, with Gottlieb’s two-out single to right center scoring Beayon to give the Lightning a walk-off win. It was the only loss of the tournament for the Calvert Fury 2k2.

The Lightning girls outscored the opposition by an astounding 67-9 margin over the weekend.

Following the victory and undefeated tournament, the team ascended to the USSSA’s No. 9 national ranking among 1,240 14U A-level softball teams. The Lightning are 38-12 in USSSA play and 55-14 overall.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the growth of these young ladies,” said head coach Julz Nutile, who coaches the team with assistants Joe Nutile, Rick Knowles and Marie Allee. “Being all seventh- and eighth-graders and having the mental toughness to fight through nine games, allowing an average of only one run per game, is just amazing. They are working together as a cohesive unit, a true team. I am truly blessed to be their coach.”
