Prior to the season, the Northeast field hockey team set a goal of adding to last year’s win total of three.

On October 10, the Eagles finished their regular season with a 5-0 shutout of Glen Burnie to notch their sixth win of the season, getting two goals from Ashley Gernert, a goal and an assist from Lisa McChesney and goals by Maddie Watson and Kassidee Wright. Carly Gernert made two saves in preserving the shutout, which moved Northeast to 6-8 overall and 6-6 in region play.

The team scored a notable victory on September 14, defeating North County 2-1 in overtime on two goals by Mary Dispaldo and avenging last year’s loss to the Knights.

The Eagles have celebrated their season in creative and inclusive ways throughout the fall. On September 27 the players each invited a chosen teacher or school staff members to their game against Southern and dedicated the afternoon to their invitees as Teacher Appreciation Day. The girls decorated T-shirts for their invited teachers and staff members, who were honored as important figures in the lives of the players.

“So often, our kids don’t get to acknowledge who is important to them,” said head coach Gina Ward. “It was nice to see a variety of teachers, and they were really excited to come.”

The team also held an alumni game on October 14, fielding two full teams of past players.

With playoffs approaching, coach Ward is excited that the players have produced a season to be proud of.

“We’ve doubled our wins, so that’s a huge thing,” said Ward. “They’re excited, and not just varsity, but JV has been very successful too. So I think the overall vibe on the team is excitement and a sense of accomplishment.”
