Northeast JV Boys Blitz Chesapeake, 72-35
Electric guard play and a suffocating full-court press powered the Northeast JV boys basketball team to an emphatic rivalry win on February 10 as the Eagles knocked off the visiting Chesapeake Cougars 72-35.
Northeast shooting guard Brandon LeBarron was unstoppable throughout the contest and put up a game-high 30 points to lead the Eagles, while point guard Jaylin Albury bolstered Northeast’s onslaught with 14 points.
Northeast coach Maurice Jackson said his team’s full-court pressure allowed the Eagles to turn the game into a track meet, which favored his speedy guards.
“We spend a good three-quarters of practices working on defense and working on the press, correcting small things and putting in changes from watching film, so yeah, we work on our defense a lot,” said Jackson. “They came out and just played the basketball they know they can play. I’ve got a lot of talented guards and some big men to complement them. Once the guards get going, they’re hard to stop, and they play really well together.”
Marcus Streeb scored 8 points for the Eagles, who got further contributions from Brian Titus (5 points), Devin Rogers (4 points), Ola Ajayi (3 points), Jayden White, Danny Baker, Ethan Mettle and Brendon Heptner (2 points each).
The runaway victory was all the more impressive seeing as how Chesapeake actually defeated Northeast 61-57 in the teams’ prior meeting this season on January 13.
“That was added inspiration for them to come out and play well today,” said Jackson. “Today, I just emphasized we needed to come out with a fast start, a fast pace, and they responded.”
Matt Rogers, Evan Lusby and Thomas Johannes all scored 7 points to lead Chesapeake. Nick Rivera scored 5 points, Tom Lewis and James Hawkens each had 3 points, and George Barr had 2.
