Following a 7-2 regular season, the 13U Buccaneers football team went on a 3-0 playoff run to win the Anne Arundel Youth Football Association Varsity U National Division championship.

Part of the Bucs’ championship playoff run included pulling off a first-time win. Having never before beaten Cape St. Clair in the past three seasons, the Bucs scored a 6-0 victory over the Cougars in the playoff semifinals to reach the championship game.

Once in the championship at Chesapeake High School on November 15, the Bucs avenged one of their two regular-season losses by defeating Crofton 32-24 in overtime on a touchdown run by Tyler San Nicolas to win the county championship and finish the year 10-2.

Tyler San Nicolas, Austin Bowen, Tyleek Coleman, Adrian Cuevas, Troy Curran, Ryne Curry, Nathan Duffie, Justin Fernandez, Nathan Fleming, Carson Holt, Jaden Kramer, Chris Kroh, Cross Lavicka, Jerry Lawson, Conner McGregor, Zack Morrow, Anthony Scali, Milton Snowden, Michael Tallman, Gideon Volkman, Ronald Wheeler, Evan Whitley, Dylan Williams, Tony Woo, Cameron Woodmancy, Tyler Woodruff and Caleb Zaruba powered the Bucs’ championship season. The team was coached by Brock McGregor, John San Nicolas, Dave Arrowood and Chad Johnson.

The Bucs also defeated Andover 22-6 on October 17 after having not beaten the Apaches in either of the last two seasons.

Another season highlight was a game-winning touchdown with less than two minutes to play that secured a 16-14 win over Davidsonville on September 26.

In an extremely competitive division in which all the teams were strong and the games were always close, coach Brock McGregor said his boys banded together to play as a team and win.

“As a coach, I live for the moments that make me proud of my team,” said coach McGregor. “I cannot express enough what a great team they are. Success did not happen overnight. The team put a hundred percent effort into every practice session and during games. Each individual played with all his heart every time he stepped foot on the field and on every play. These boys played as a team, not as a group of individuals who happen to wear the same uniform. Every block, tackle, run and reception was the result of hard work, teamwork and like-minded young men.”

Above all, the Bucs conducted themselves as good sportsmen committed to a common goal.

“Individual status was never a worry for us,” said McGregor. “We always focused on the team as a whole and not as individual players, and they always maintained a humble attitude and displayed good sportsmanship. I’m proud of my boys.”
