Your favorite British nanny who is practically perfect in every way is coming to Sunset Elementary in “Mary Poppins Jr.”

The cast features Raeanne Franc as Mary Poppins; Karina Creekmore as Bert; Carter Menke as George Banks; Makayla Stauffer as Winifred Banks; McKenna Lorigan as Jane Banks; and Liam Frain as Michael Banks.

“Mary Poppins Jr.” is based on the popular Disney movie that follows Jane and Michael Banks as they go on adventures with their newest nanny and her friend Bert. The production features beloved songs like “A Spoonful Of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “Let’s Go Fly A Kite.”

The show has many lessons that transcend time. Sunset music teacher Jill Beram-Liimatta said her favorite part of the show is when the characters come across an impoverished woman in the park who is feeding birds. The children judge her but quickly learn there is more to her than just her appearance.

“In a world, right now, where entertainment industry and media sources focus on what we have and what we don't have, this is a lesson that many of our children continue to struggle with,” Beram-Liimatta said. “It is a valuable lesson to remember there is more to someone than their outward appearance; there is beauty in everything and having possessions is just that: having possessions.”

The play is being directed by teachers Susan Wittek, Jen Welsh and Helen Quade and parent Deborah Fluhr.

“The Sunset Elementary School Drama Club operates on a rather professional level with regards to the world of theater,” Beram-Liimatta said. “When you attend a Sunset production, you are experiencing high-quality theater at the elementary school level. It is quite remarkable.”

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $6 for children. Purchase tickets by searching “Sunset” at www.showtix4u.com.

There are two performances, both of which will be held at Chesapeake High School. The performances are Friday, April 26, at 7:00pm and Saturday, April 27, at 7:00pm.
