An adventurous young foodie, her extremely particular younger brother and an energetic toddler jump into the backseat of their SUV, excited for a dinner spent anywhere but home.
Where can their adults take this complex combination of appetites and personalities for a stress-free meal?
Here are a few ideas for local parents searching for the perfect place to take the whole family out to eat:
JB’s
It’s an established fact in our family that if my picky eater gets any say in the restaurant choice, we’re headed to JB’s.
The personal-sized cheese pizza and macaroni and cheese (spoiler alert: it’s Kraft) are easy go-to choices for those who don’t want any surprises with their meal.
Have a tiny tot in the early stages of baby-led weaning? A side of steamed broccoli will keep your feeding plan in place.
Bonus points: There’s a small arcade that keeps young diners entertained.
Even more bonus points: Patrons celebrating a birthday are gifted a free dessert, and there is nothing kid-sized about them.
Adam’s Taphouse and Grille
When the adults need their barbecue fix, Adam’s is the local go-to. Fortunately, the restaurant offers plenty of kid-friendly options, including the favorite of many baseball fans: a hot dog.
For the budding foodie, smaller versions of the pork sandwich and cheeseburger are on the menu as well.
Bonus points: Kids’ menu items come with an Oreo, and sometimes that’s all it takes to tip the scales in your favor.
Park Tavern
The kids’ menu at Park Tavern offers just about every go-to favorite a young eater might request: grilled cheese, corn dogs, pasta with red sauce, and chicken tenders, just to name a few.
One young source shared that what sets Park Tavern apart from a kid’s perspective isn’t one of the menu items but the chocolate chip cookie served as dessert.
The Social
If you’re looking for a reason to skip the kitchen mess on a Tuesday, look no further than The Social. Families are eligible for one free kid’s meal per adult entrée purchased. Free buttered noodles that I didn’t cook, clean up, or pay for? Yes, please.
Cypress Restaurant
On Mondays, children ages 12 and under eat free at Cypress as well with each qualifying adult purchase. The deal includes everything on the regular kids’ menu – pizzas, quesadillas, burgers, tenders and more - except for the kiddo-sized crab cakes and salmon.
Garry’s Grill
Garry’s has one of the most reasonably priced kids’ menus in town, with most meals maxing out at $5.99.
The one exception: The Crabby Patty, but what Maryland parent complains when their child orders a crab cake?
In addition to a range of classic favorites (chicken tenders, grilled cheese) and smaller versions of regular menu items (meatloaf), Garry’s offers a selection of lower-priced snack items such as peanut butter apple rings for $2.50.
La Posta Pizzeria
Families will find an elevated dining experience that also caters to young taste buds at La Posta.
The kids’ menu offers chicken tenders, as well as a smaller version of an Italian classic, pasta and meatballs. With pizzeria in the name, it’s no surprise that La Posta serves up cheese and pepperoni pies for the kids, as well.
With several pizzas to choose from on the main menu, one option is to skip the kids’ menu altogether and make it a family pizza night.
Bonus points: Complimentary bread baskets keep hangry children (and adults) satisfied until the meals arrive.
Kyoto Japanese Steakhouse
Any given night, you’re likely to find a table with older children and tweens delighting in the unique dining experience of Kyoto.
Seated at a table that surrounds a flat cooktop, families watch as the chef expertly lights a fire and creates their meal. With everything cooked at the table, it’s easy to deconstruct meals and serve each member of your party exactly what they’re willing to eat.
Rice, veggies and your chosen proteins are served family style. If desired, your tableside chef will cut up tiny bits of shrimp and try to toss it in your mouth.
The tableside entertainment makes Kyoto a fun choice for birthdays and other celebrations.
Severna Park Taphouse
Outdoor dining season is here, and Severna Park Taphouse has space outside for the whole family. Let the kids get their wiggles out before the server arrives with the chicken tenders, grilled cheese, a hamburger or macaroni and cheese – all served with a side of tater tots.
Señor Chile
As children grow, so too do their appetites. While some kids’ menus offer portions more suitable for toddlers and preschoolers, Señor Chile has options to fuel the tween in your life.
Specifically, the kids’ burrito rivals the size of its adult counterpart and includes a side of fries.
Garten
For those young eaters looking to broaden their culinary horizons, Garten has some unique options.
The kids’ chicken schnitzel and Garten brat won’t be found anywhere else in town. If you’re looking to satisfy an adventurous palate as well as a more particular one, grilled cheese, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese and hamburgers are available, too.
