Baked Goods And Desserts That Will Sweeten Your Holiday

The holidays are a time for families and friends to gather and make warm, sweet memories together. While this sentiment largely appeals to the heart, there are also warm and sweet ways to satisfy one’s palate.

Shoppers luckily do not have to look far to appease both. Several community bakeries, restaurants and shops have holiday treats and delicacies for Christmas, Thanksgiving and every other holiday.

Lauer’s Supermarket and Bakery has plenty of offerings this holiday season. Two premier items are the thin, cutout sugar cookies and the store-made fruit cakes. The Lauer’s bakery will also have holiday stollen available for purchase.

“Everything’s made from scratch, so it’s like being made at home,” said owner Bernie Snoops. “The benefit is timesaving for people not to have to make it. And ours is as good as homemade.”

Most bakery orders at Lauer's can be made up to the day before they are needed. Specialty orders should be placed at least one week in advance.

Two Rivers Steak & Fish House also has fresh goods to offer. This holiday season, the restaurant is offering four pies: sour cream apple pie, peach blueberry crumb pie, pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake pie. Two Rivers is also offering shooters, which are little cups of pie. The shooters flavors are pecan pie, pumpkin pie and espresso, and they also come in a variety pack.

The last day to place a pie order for Thanksgiving is November 17. The last day to place an order for Christmas is December 20. To place an order with the bakery at Two Rivers, call 410-360-1919.

Julianne Brown, owner of Cakes and Confections Bakery Café, said it’s hard to go wrong with pumpkin pie. “But we have several pumpkin alternatives like pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin cream cheese rolls and our pumpkin Smith Island cake,” she added.

Customers don’t have to wait until Christmas to start thinking about baked goods – dessert is just as popular at Thanksgiving time. “For Thanksgiving, it’s probably a tie between our pumpkin Smith Island cake, our pumpkin cream cheese roll and our deep-dish pumpkin pie,” Brown said. “And at Christmastime, we do beautiful, delicious yule logs.”

For Thanksgiving, Lauer’s has “all pumpkin items,” in the words of Snoops: pumpkin pie, pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin bread and pumpkin donuts.
