Bodkin Raises Record Amount For American Heart Association

Posted

Bodkin Elementary School wrapped up its 18th annual Kids Heart Challenge on March 8. It was a record year for Bodkin, which raised $23,695 to donate to the American Heart Association. As an incentive this year, students who raised the most money were invited to pie teachers and school administrators in the face.

For Bodkin students, this fundraiser is a personal one. There are currently three “heart survivors” at the school: fifth-grader Catherine Smith, fourth-grader Lauren Hayes and second-grade teacher Tiffany Cruz.

“This is more meaningful to them,” said physical education teacher Michelle Corey, who has organized the fundraiser for the last 12 years. “Our students understand that they’re helping people and saving lives.”

The program kicked off on February 24 with a variety of activities to help students stay heart healthy: rock climbing, hula hooping and dancing. Donations were accepted online or through checks.

As a final act, the top three fundraisers were invited to slime Corey, Principal Andrea Roche and Assistant Principal Sandra Nee-Jackson.
