Broadneck Girls Lax Ends Month On Three-Game Win Streak

After an up-and-down March, Broadneck’s girls lacrosse team found April pretty fruitful, going 4-1 on the month to head into county tournament play at 7-4.

The Bruins beat Mount Hebron 17-7 on April 8, Southern 17-6 on April 16, Crofton 19-5 on April 19, and Arundel 16-4 on April 23. The only setback was an overtime 11-10 loss to Severna Park on April 12.

An early learning curve seems to be almost conquered for the Bruins, who alternated wins and losses for the first eight games of the season but have now won three straight.

“We’ve been talking about discipline. We’re a young team, we have some new faces, so I think it’s all in the learning and in the process,” said Broadneck coach Katy Kelly. “We have stuff that we want to do; we just have to be disciplined enough to be patient and actually be able to do it. … But we’re young, so it’s kind of what I expected this year to be, an up and down learning season with all the new faces. We’re getting there.”

The Bruins had Severna Park on the ropes, but turnovers in transition and inconsistency up front resulted in the rivalry game feeling like more of a missed opportunity.

Still, Broadneck has go-to attackers in Sienna Miller, Lily Trout and Olivia Orso. It’s just a matter of getting the right progressions to create space for those three and the supporting attackers and midfielders.

“You have to be really refined through the midfield. That’s something we haven’t really struggled with, but (against Severna Park) we really struggled with that,” Kelly said. “We’re still trying to figure out the face of the offense. We’re saying ‘run this,’ whether it’s their most confident thing or it’s not. We’ve had go-to (plays) in the past, and we need to identify what that is for us now. And that’s what these games help with, and they get the conversation started, and they get everyone grinding again.”
