Evolve Earns Fourth Place, Best Choreography At ICHSA

On April 26, Chesapeake High School’s Evolve a cappella group competed at the International Championship for High School A Cappella Finals. The singers finished in fourth place overall and earned Best Choreography.

The group did not have an easy road to the finals. After coming in third at the semifinal competition, Evolve was able to compete in the Wild Card round. It then earned second place, securing a place in the finals.

“Everyone, the day of, was wanting to do their best, but it definitely wasn’t, ‘I’m so anxious, I’m so terrified,’” said Michael Brisentine, who directs Evolve. “Everyone was so kind. It was like, ‘We’re all here to do our best, so let’s just do it.’”

The finals were held at The Town Hall in New York City. Evolve performed to a big crowd, as well as to a traveling fan group that cheered them on.

This is Brisentine’s last year with Evolve and Chesapeake High School. This fall, he will be back in school earning his master’s degree for choral conducting.

“I’m not sure what will happen to Evolve,” Brisentine said. “If this is the end, it feels good to have gone out with a bang.”

Evolve recently released an album, which is available on all streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music. The album, “Spark,” consists of six songs that were recorded by last year’s Evolve group.
