Falcons Make Maryland Sports History

The Severna Park boys and girls lacrosse teams both played in Class 3A state championship games at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Maryland, last night and both made history in the process.

Severna Park’s boys team took the field first and beat Towson 8-6 to win their record-extending eighth straight title and record-extending 13th overall. Tim Sullivan put the Falcons on the board about five minutes into the game, and 35 seconds later, he struck again as Ben Ruppert found him on the right side of the cage and Sullivan rifled it in from close range. After Towson tied the score 2-2, Sullivan notched a hat trick, but Towson came back and took the lead as Luke Richardson scooped up a rebound and fired it home.

Jack Fish evened the score again in the second quarter, and Severna Park stayed on target as Tucker Moran found John Burkhardt, who buried a shot, bringing the score to 5-4 with 3:08 left in the half. The third quarter opened with goals from Fish, Nolan Grizzle and then Burkhardt as the boys put the game out of reach.

But Severna Park’s athletes weren’t done. The girls played Dulaney and won 12-6 to claim their second straight title and the program’s 16th overall, a state record they now own outright.

Dulaney scored the first two goals, but Severna Park rallied. Bella Van Gieson, Erin Hussey, Kate Evans and Francesca Dunoyer all scored to put Severna Park ahead after one quarter. Hussey netted her second goal at the start of the second quarter and Sara Kreis found Maria Bragg to give the Falcons a three-goal lead. Bragg scored another and Dulaney added two to bring the score to 7-4 at the half.

It was almost all Falcons from there. Bragg completed her hat trick from the free position, Peyton Jeffers scored, Bragg added her fourth goal, and Van Gieson notched her second.

As the spring season concludes, Severna Park has once again etched both lacrosse programs into the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association record books.
