Lauer’s Owners Inducted Into Food Industry Hall Of Fame

Bernie Snoops and Babbie Poyer joined their parents, Ed and Helen Lauer, in the Food Industry Hall of Fame during a ceremony at Martin’s West in Baltimore on November 7. Here’s what the program said about two of its newest inductees:

Bernadette Snoops and Babette Poyer worked in the family business alongside their parents since its inception in January 1974.

Through high school and college, they gained experience in all departments while learning the different facets of the business. After college, Babbie left to pursue a career in accounting while Bernie continued to solidify her interest in the family business. At that time, Lauer’s implemented “computer associated checkout,” becoming the first independent grocer in Maryland to have scanning at the checkout. With the second generation well on their way to success, Lauer’s founders Ed and Helen started to explore succession planning. In 2006, the baton was officially passed and Babbie and Bernie completed the purchase of the stores. Since then, they have continued to expand the homemade offerings in their grab-and-go and home meal replacement departments. The Lauer’s Luscious Bakery has become a well-known destination in the community and surrounding areas. Babbie and Bernie continued to operate the stores while emphasizing the Lauer’s commitment to the local Pasadena community.

As of October 19, Bernie and Babbie have sold the stores, but the Lauer legacy will be remembered in Pasadena for years to come.

Babbie’s retirement plans include traveling and spending time with her three sons — Greg, Ryan and Brad — and her grandson, Liam.

Bernie plans on traveling with her husband, Craig, and spending time with her daughter, Whitney, and son, Garrett.

Other 2019 inductees inlcuded Governor Larry Hogan, Otterbein’s Bakery, and John Gates of Lancaster Foods LLC. The Best-Met, Pete Manos Award went to Nicholas Bertram, president of GIANT Food Stores LLC.
