Letter To The Editor: News From Fort Smallwood Park

Posted

There is good news and bad news to report. The good news is that the current sand restoration project will soon be completed, and the walking path around the pond will be reopened. Other good news is that the current phase of the shore restoration has been completed.

The bad news is that, as part of the shore restoration, about 200 saplings have been planted in a 1-acre plot to replace removed trees. The idea is to create a mini-forest, as required by the state and federal governments. Those of us who love the park wish the 200 saplings had been more spread out.

Continuing bad news is that walkers at the park still have no walking path through the shore restoration area. Having to walk in the road makes for a dangerous situation, as cars are coming and going. Even worse, the road goes by the children’s play area. Keeping cars and pedestrians separate should have been a major goal of the various restoration projects at the park.
