New Cell Towers Coming to Lake Shore

Anyone who has spent time around the Lake Shore area in Pasadena has undoubtedly noticed the cellphone service – or in many instances, the lack thereof.

Whether shopping at Lakeshore Plaza or cheering on young athletes at Lake Shore Athletic Complex, getting a quality signal can be harder than finding front-row parking or scoring a winning goal.

With that in mind, local representatives have been working diligently to coordinate with Verizon on resolving the cellular service issues in the area.

“We have been working with Verizon, encouraging them to improve service around the Lake Shore area,” explained Delegate Nic Kipke, who said it’s been a coordinated effort alongside Senator Bryan Simonaire, Delegate Brian Chisholm and Councilman Nathan Volke.

According to Kipke, Verizon conducted a study and confirmed that there were significant issues regarding the service in these areas. Based on the findings, the plan is to install a small relay tower to increase services around Lakeshore Plaza and Magothy Plaza before the end of the year. In 2020, Verizon plans to install a larger tower along Woods Road.

“We are working toward adding a cell site in the Woods Road area that will add coverage and capacity for residents, businesses and first responders,” said David Weissmann, a Verizon communications manager. “This is one of several projects locally, including new small cells, that will enhance capacity for our customers.”

There is also potential for an additional tower to be built in 2021 along Magothy Beach Road, according to Kipke. However, specific dates and timelines for construction are not locked in at the moment, as the projects are contingent on local zoning and building regulations.

Weissmann said that there are still several steps before Verizon can install the equipment, but “we are encouraged by support by local residents and elected officials.”

While there’s still work to be done, things are headed in a positive direction.

“For me, being in public office, since day one I’ve worked to solve problems rather than focusing on getting involved with partisan political [sideshows],” Kipke added. “All of these will provide service enhancements to better serve the members of the community.”
