Rotary Raises Over $5,000 With Crab Feast Raffle

Posted

On September 3, the Lake Shore-Severna Park Rotary held a raffle drawing for a crab feast, delivered to the winner's place of choice. The Rotary’s goal was to sell 100 tickets, raising at least $5,000 to expand their ability to offer more scholarships to graduating high school seniors in 2021. The Lake Shore-Severna Park Rotary currently offer scholarships to Severna Park, Chesapeake and Northeast high school students.

Additionally, Rotary offers leadership training for high school students. The club intends to support the Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly (RYLA) toward that purpose.

“We began planning for a new fundraiser to replace the Crab Soup Cook-off January 2019,” said John Clark, president of the Rotary Club of Lake Shore-Severna Park. “Unfortunately, after 10 years, we were no longer seeing many restaurants willing to participate in that fundraiser. Then the pandemic hit in March, typically the month we held the event at Kurtz's Beach, and the shutdown occurred. We had hoped to run a different fundraiser at that time. After a few months of searching, a fellow Rotarian suggested the crab feast raffle, which we then acted on.”

A virtual drawing for the winning raffle ticket was held on September 3. Rotary netted $5,337.

“As a first-time fundraiser, we were very pleased!” Clark said. “We sold 93 of the 100 tickets available, too. We will be offering more assistance to families and students as the school year progresses.”
