Scouts To Collect Food For The Hungry In Central Maryland

The Boy Scouts of America, Baltimore Area Council (BAC, BSA) will collect food for the hungry and homeless in Central Maryland in March.

The Scouting for Food campaign is part of a national program that supports youth for their service to the community. Local Scouts collect donations of nonperishable food items so food pantries can replenish their empty shelves and continue to serve the hungry.

In partnership with the Safeway Foundation, Scouts will distribute door hangers in local-area neighborhoods with instructions about the food campaign, the weekend of Saturday, March 21. Residents are asked to fill bags with nonperishable food items and leave them outside their doors on Saturday, March 28, for the Scouts to collect.

Scouts will deliver food donations to more than 70 food pantries in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County, Carroll County, Harford County and Howard County. Last year, this effort provided more than 200,000 pounds of food to pantries that service hungry families throughout Central Maryland. As a result, those pantries are serving more clients because of the Scouts’ efforts. This year, Scouts plan to collect even more food to help neighbors in need.

All donations are gratefully accepted. Food pantries have specifically requested the following food items: hearty soup, stew or chili; tuna; chicken, salmon, or luncheon meat (e.g., Spam); canned fruit; pure fruit juice; canned vegetables; canned tomato or pasta sauce; canned beans; evaporated milk; and healthy snacks.
