The Knott Scholarship Funds recently announced recipients of the 2024 Knott Scholarship Competition winners. These scholarships, funded by the Marion Burk Knott Scholarship Fund and the Marion I. and Henry J. Knott Scholarship Fund, cover four-year, full tuition in the Catholic school of the scholar’s choosing.

Since its inception in 1981, the Knott Scholarship Funds have provided support for more than 2,000 academically talented Catholic students who reside in parts of the Archdiocese of Baltimore to attend Catholic schools. Six of the 28 scholarships for 2024 have been awarded to St. John the Evangelist parish community members.

“I am so proud of the students from our parish school and homeschool community chosen as Knott Scholars this year,” said the Rev. Erik Arnold, St. John the Evangelist’s pastor. “We share in the joy of their parents, families, and teachers who have encouraged them, and I am grateful to the Knott Scholarship Fund for the work they do encouraging and empowering our Catholic students to grow in their faith as leaders in their schools, parishes and communities. Congratulations to our newest class of Knott Scholars!”

The Knott Scholarship scholars are:

  • William Breslin and Madelyn George (attending St. John the Evangelist Catholic School)

  • Zoey Fellner and Theresa Quigley (to attend Archbishop Spalding High School)

  • Marie Johnson and Reagan O’Brien (to attend Mount de Sales Academy)

O’Brien is enrolled in the St. Thomas Aquinas Tutorial program, while Breslin, Fellner, George, Johnson and Quigley are enrolled at St. John the Evangelist School.

“We are grateful for the Knott Foundation’s commitment to Catholic education and their partnership with our St. John the Evangelist students and families,” said Casey Buckstaff, St. John the Evangelist School principal. “I am excited for the opportunity this scholarship provides to students moving forward in their Catholic school education. The St. John recipients are outstanding leaders in the classroom, in activities and in their service to others.”

Parents Terry and Katelyn George feel that the Knott Scholarship demonstrates the passion the St. John the Evangelist community has for students and parishioners, allowing Madelyn to flourish academically, socially and spiritually, while gaining confidence, friendships and a hunger for learning that will continue to enrich her life for years to come.

“We are proud to see Theresa receive such substantial recognition for all the hard work she has put into her studies over the course of her time at St. John,” Kathryn Quigley said. “This type of acknowledgement really helps to reinforce the value of character traits like perseverance, openness to learning, and leadership in the face of contrary ‘normative’ forces that will help her be successful in life.

“This will also provide direct exposure to the real impacts that charity and service can bring back to the community, instilling a sense of the importance of contributing to society in a positive and additive way as she shapes how she will live her life in the coming years.”

The newly designated scholars will attend the Knott Scholarship Funds Pinning Ceremony on May 5, which will include Mass and breakfast. To learn more about the Knott Scholarship Fund, visit www.knottscholar.org
