In May, Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company installed new display screens in its station. This is part of the station’s efforts to upgrade its technology.
“We have always done our best to have the latest and greatest when it comes to alerting technology,” said James Michie, the captain at EHVFC. “We think that it is extremely important that the firefighters have as much information as they can in a user-friendly format before they go out the door on a call.”
The new display screens were created by Chief Technologies. During a call, the screen displays the nature of the call, the address and the box area. When in non-emergency mode, the screen shows a calendar of events, traffic cameras, the weather and any important announcements for company operations.
“In addition it shows an overview map of the incident location,” Michie said. “This gives a nice leg up for when you are going on a call so you have a better idea of where you are going.”
EHVFC is always testing out new pieces of equipment to use on its apparatuses, Michie said.
“We are constantly replacing older technology with newer to provide the highest level of service that we can,” Michie said. “We bring in vendors when we do training so we can see which new equipment works best so we can make the best purchases possible.”
Technology at the firehouse is more than screens and display boards: it includes it the building itself, Michie said. Going forward, EHVFC is looking to build a new station.
“We have designed a state of the art firehouse, which we hope will last us 75 years or longer, once we are able to build,” Michie said. “Unfortunately, we are at a point in time where our building no longer is able to fulfill our needs.”
