Broadneck Softball Pulls Away From Severna Park

Looking to jumpstart an up-and-down season against their biggest rivals, the Broadneck softball team got key contributions from a couple of less-often-mentioned sources.

Rylan Crisafulli struck out 14 batters, Aliceanna Weibley crushed a two-run homer over the left-field wall, and the Bruins used a huge fifth inning to pull away from Severna Park for an 8-1 win on Monday.

Broadneck scratched across two runs in the top of the fourth to open the scoring, but the Falcons clawed one back in the bottom half on Sally Trent’s RBI single. That ratcheted up the pressure on Crisafulli, but the Broadneck offense picked their freshman pitcher up.

In the top of the fifth, they brought two runs across to successfully chase Severna Park’s freshman hurler Quinlyn Bary. Then Weibley got every bit of a pitch over the plate for her first “over the fence” home run.

“It’s our rival, so I was pretty nervous starting out. I just threw strikes and hoped for the best,” Crisafulli said. “Once we got those runs, it really helped me calm down and just throw strikes.”

Crisafulli continued her string of five-plus inning outings, going the distance and allowing just one run on three hits.

For the Falcons, conceding those five runs in one inning proved to be too much to recover from.

“We haven’t had one of those big innings in a while. We had been looking pretty smooth recently, so that was tough to see come back up,” said Severna Park coach Bailey Benedick. “I think we fell asleep a little bit; we thought we were feeling really good, but you can’t come out like that against Broadneck. We had to come out hot, and we just came out flat.”
